Witches
Origin: Non-Human in origin. Born from the elf-demon war, they are genetically stunted demons. Their origin tale is unknown to the general population
Lifespan: On average 160 years. Are fertile from 20 years to the last 40 years of their life.
Subspecies: None [are a demon subspecies]
Ley Line Access: Can tap a line; Can see auras if invoking second sight.
Day Schedule: 11 am is their preferred day start, to approximately 4 am.
Strengths: Can wield both earth and ley line magic with training and tools, far easier than humans that do the same. They have a natural second sight that shows people's auras. Can use elven magic with rigorous training.
Weaknesses: Average speed and strength, if you cut off a witch's connection to a ley line or their earth charms, they are often incapable of fighting back.
Attributes: Insular, witches are often content to stay out of political battles, their own importance ensured by the fact they are widely needed for their magical skills.
Allies: No one and everyone, as they are widely above political battles due to their status.
Enemies: Elves, as the burgeoning population threatens their monopoly on the charm market.
Full write up: Sourced in parts from various places, including the Wiki entry.
An Inderlander species and theone of the practitioners of magic in reality. they are a different species from humans altogether, although almost phenotypically indistinguishable, and due to a different number of chromosomal pairs, hybrids with humans are impossible. They are demographically the largest of the three major Inderlander species. Most of the population is unaware that the race of witches is the result of a curse cast on demons by elves; they fled the Ever-After 5,000 years prior to the Turn, abandoning the realm to the demons and elves.
Rosewood Syndrome is a consequence the curse that created the witches which affects certain children who would otherwise be capable of kindling demon-magic, and the disease, with only two exceptions resulting from illegal genetic medicine, invariably leads to an early death. Witches of low magic ability, generally due to a lack of education, are called warlocks. Witch and warlock have no gender connotation.
Witches are notoriously self policing on their types of magic, the smut left from casting a black spell visible on your aura unless you shove it onto someone else. All witches can see auras with their second sight, characterized by an earthy redwood smell and their hair floating in a nonexistant draft. The Coven of Moral and Ethical Standards is a policing body for witches who have taken upon themselves the duty of maintaining lawful behavior for witches and warlocks. The coven is a small body of eight which self-elects members from the general witch populace as need arises, often rigorously trained to be better than black witches without requiring the same black magic.
Witch Magic Types [Does not include demonic magic]
Earth magic
Earth magic filters ley line energy through plants and animals and, although slower than ley line magic, is just as powerful. It is associated with living things, potions, amulets, and charms. Spells can sometimes be stored and called upon later, and if uninvoked, can be stored almost indefinitely. Only a witch's blood can invoke earth magic, as the enzyme that kindles magic is only found in witch blood. Demons cannot invoke witch magic and vice versa. Witch blood cannot be stored for more than a day, as the enzyme quickly dies. Earth magic can actually alter one's physical appearance or shape. The effects are permanent unless doused in saltwater. Earth magic tends to be associated with white magic users since it is more difficult to gain access to the materials necessary for black earth magic. Black earth magic involves the sacrifice of animals and, in some cases, humans or Inderlanders.
Ley line magic
Ley line magic has less permanence than earth magic, but is much faster and more easily adaptable. Power can be drawn directly from a ley line or through an animal familiar. The energy is either channeled using a focus object or what is referred to as "wild magic" in which the power is imprecisely directed by the magic user that drew on the line. Ley line magic can only alter perception and not physical form like earth magic. It's far easier for ley line magic to slip from white to black, as the materials seem far less sinister on the surface and are easier to get.
